Why get involved?

Face Africa trips are designed for travellers who want more out of a trip than just seeing the highlights and the inside of a bus or truck. Our clients have often travelled independently themselves and come to us to find similar experiences. Our aim is to provide you with an insight into Africa and its peoples, as well as to enjoy all that its fabulous countries have to offer.

During the course of every Face Africa trip, you will have the opportunity to meet with and talk to local people. We try to ensure that this is not ‘staged’, but organised as naturally as possible. Some may like to accompany the cook on a shopping trip into the local markets; others may like to be shown around a local hospital or orphanage by a community worker; we often arrange visits to schools to meet and play with the kids – an impromptu game of Africa’s continental sport (football) is not uncommon.

It is these chance encounters, not pre-meditated or even likely, that often provide the lasting memories for our travellers. Because life is about people, and many are surprised to discover that Africans face the same issues and have the same concerns as you & I at home. Just in a slightly different way. Understanding and empathy flows both ways, and friendship is formed.

Why projects?

Most Face Africa itineraries include one or more visits to a formal ‘Community Project’. These can be anything from a guided walk around a tribal village in Malawi (complete with a lesson in pounding maize), to spending a day working on a school in Uganda – painiting a classroom or building a path.

There are literally thousands of ‘Community Projects’ up and down the African continent, some of which are vital and worthwhile, some of which are not. Through many years of experience, we have selected certain projects and give them our full support. The projects we support are chosen on a number of criteria. These include:-

  • the impetus for the project must come from the local people it is intended to help
  • the project must be sustainable
  • the project must be developed enough to benefit from the input of the Face Africa group
  • the project must be well managed to ensure there is no negative impact from our presence
